Why should my child join the swim team?
The Bon Air Blue Streaks Swim Team is a great opportunity for children of all ages to be part of a team, improve swimming skills, and make friends. During the summer, our kids could all use a constructive outlet for their energy!
- No competitive swimming experience is necessary for any age level to join, however we do require that swimmers be able to swim the length of the pool (25 yards) by themselves to ensure the safety of all swimmers.
- Swim Team is a great team sport that provides individual competition opportunities, group (relay) competition opportunities, and encourages teammate support.
- Swim Team offers a very inexpensive summer opportunity for kids to be involved in an activity every day that is engaging and will wear them out!

Meet Our 2026 Coaches
Head Swim Coach: Erica Stanley

We are elated that Coach Erica will be returning for her third year as our Head Swim Coach! As a youth, Erica got her start in summer league and then on to year-round swimming. She then swam Division 1 at Radford University. Erica coached summer and year-round teams during college and after graduating, and then took a break when her three children were small. She has returned to her love of swimming by coaching for James River High School (Go Rapids!!), Woodmont for 2 years, and is a Swim Instructor at NOVA. Erica’s passion for swim coaching shows in everything she does when interacting with swimmers and parents. She loves that swimming is a sport that anyone can participate in and excel at, and enjoys encouraging swimmers at all levels.
Erica is an ASCA Level II certified coach. This certification only adds to a strong passion for growth, community and sportsmanship in and out of the water.
Her three children Kason, Aurelia and Mylah are excited to return to the Blue Streaks this summer, too!
Senior Assistant Swim Coach: Christine Markham

We are delighted to welcome Christine Markham back to our coaching team as senior assistant swim coach for a second year! Christine is an RVA native, hailing from the south side where she swam summer league. She is proud to be a graduate from the first and finest graduating class of Cosby High School, in 2008. She went to Old Dominion University, graduating in 2013 with a degree in Parks and Recreation Management. She went on to run many programs, including being the director of a summer camp for several years. Christine brings over a decade of experience in team training and coaching young people. She is a certified Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Instructor. She currently teaches swim lessons for the Henrico Swim Program and at NOVA Aquatics, where she also provides adaptive swim instruction.
Christine also has a 4 year old daughter that keeps her on her toes!
Assistant Swim Coach: Arabelle Rafferty

We are very excited that Coach Arabelle will return for her fourth year of coaching as a Blue Streak. She has been on our swim team since 2015, and joined the SwimRVA team in 2018. She also swims for James River High School.
Arabelle is in her senior year at James River High School.
Assistant Swim Coach: Maddie Donovan

We are so fortunate to have Coach Maddie back as an assistant coach for a third year! Maddie had been a volunteer coach for the Blue Streaks for the two years prior.
Maddie has been a Blue Streak swimmer since 2014, and swam for the SwimRVA team. She is currently a senior at James River High School in the Leadership Program.
Assistant Swim Coach: Finn Rafferty

We are delighted to have Coach Finn return for his second year as assistant coach! Finn had been a volunteer coach at Bon Air for the two years prior.
Finn has been on our summer swim team since 2015, and has been swimming year round with SwimRVA since 2021. He is a junior at L.C. Bird High School in the Governor’s Academy for Engineering.
Junior Assistant Swim Coach: Tatum Ralston

We love these Blue Streaks for life! Tatum will be joining us this year as a junior assistant coach! She has been a volunteer coach for the past 2 summers. She has enjoyed the opportunity to get to know the swimmers and grow as a coach!
Tatum has been a Blue Streak since 2015, and joined SwimRVA in 2020. She is currently a sophomore at James River High School, where she is also a member of the swim team.
Meet Our 2026 Aquatics Captains (Volunteer Leadership)
These parent volunteers have been hard at work organizing activities that make our swim and dive teams stronger and better:
-
Aquatics VP: Catherine Rafferty
swimdiveBACA@gmail.com
804-852-8507

Catherine has three swimmers ages 18 and 16, and 7. She has no personal experience swimming, but has grown to love swim team watching her children swim since 2015. Catherine works in tech at a bank, and is a Bon Air native.
-
Swim Rep: Kate Rivard

Kate has two boys that swim at Bon Air. She grew up swimming in Tennessee, and then went on to swim in college. She has taught lessons, and coached summer league teams, and is now excited to use her swim knowledge to help the Blue Streaks! She works part time as an assistant teacher in a junior kindergarten class.
-
Parent Volunteer Rep: Rachel Douglas & Reid Powell

Rachel Douglas has worked and volunteered for many formal nonprofits and informal grassroots organizations and she can’t wait to put those skills to work for BACA. She has two Blue Streaks and loves seeing them grow through swim.

Reid Powell is a devoted swim dad who prefers behind-the-scenes service work. He originally signed up to volunteer thinking it would be “helpful” and accidentally found his calling as Clerk of the Course. Now he can’t imagine a summer without organizing heats and quietly preventing chaos, even on his birthday.
Off deck, he plays bass in the local band No Refunds, comprised of a bunch of BACA dads. You may even catch one of their shows in the parking lot as the summer rolls along.
-
Marketing and Fundraising: Jennifer Hall

Jennifer has 4 kids and is excited to be watching all of them swim as Blue Streaks. Jennifer swam year round for many years and continued competitive swimming into college. She is thrilled to now be a part of the Blue Streak’s Captains team promoting summer swim.
-
Spirit Wear: Shawn Ralston

Shawn has two swimmers at Bon Air – daughter Tatum, 16 and son Archer, 14. Shawn’s favorite summer memories as a kid were swimming for her community swim team. She continued to swim competitively into college and still can be found swimming laps in the morning during adult swim at BACA! Shawn is VP of an environmental nonprofit and loves volunteering at BACA swim meets during her free time in the summer.
-
Social: Lauren Powell & Shannon Thomas

Lauren Powell is a swim mom who swam for the Blue Streaks herself back in the 80s and 90s, which means she takes pool nostalgia and swim team social endeavors very seriously. She’s here to organize the chaos, plan karaoke nights, talent shows, pancake breakfasts, and cheer at the meets like it’s still 1992.
Mostly, she’s just ready to have fun and help make things magical for the kids… as soon as she remembers where she set down her coffee.

Shannon Thomas is the Blue Streaks’ resident crafty queen and veteran swim/dive mom with a knack for throwing a party. She’s the one sketching little sharpie masterpieces on swimmers’ backs before meets and helping make magic happen behind-the-scenes at Bon Air with Lauren. If it sparkles or feels electric, Shannon probably had a hand in it.
